Alex Patsavas, Grey's Anatomy Music Supervisor:
I was really delighted when I was asked to write a little piece about music supervision for Grey's Anatomy. It is one of those rare special gigs. I started on the Grey's pilot about six years ago and spent countless hours talking music with Executive Producers Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes.

We knew that we wanted to define a unique sound for the show. Using both acoustic and electronic instrumentation and focusing on both the very serious and very whimsical were part of that signature sound. Psapp, The Fray, Snow Patrol, KT Tunstall, Brandi Carlisle, Greg Laswell, Ingrid Michaelson, Joe Purdy, The Bird & The Bee, Anya Marina, Gomez, Shady Bard and Mat Kearney are all go-to artists for the show. Exec Producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, Producer Tammy Ann Casper, Editors Susan Vaill, Ed Ornelas and David Greenspan are devoted music fans all and have been essential to the sound.

Anya Marina:
Having my music in Grey's Anatomy changed my life almost overnight. Not only was I able to afford a down payment on a new (used) car; but I was now on the radar of a whole new demographic of people who liked my music. The extra added bonus was that I was a big fan of the show, so it was a win-win all around.

I respect Alex's taste in music so much--she's very choosy--so being on her playlist was like finding out the cool group in high school wanted to hang out with me.

Greg Laswell:
I was on tour each of the three times that my songs were used in Grey's Anatomy so I never actually got to hear them the night they played. My parents did, however, and I think I prefer their phone calls with me playing in the background to actually seeing it myself. They are huge fans of the show and I knew they would be watching the season premiere... I thought it would be fun not to tell them that I was going to be in it. My mom spit out her drink. iI have seen the episodes since and am very honored and thankful for the use of my little songs. Thanks, Grey's! (We're on a first-name basis).

Mat Kearney:
When I write my songs, I don't necessarily picture doctors making out to them in a supply closet, or people getting logs pulled out of their abdomens, but I enjoy seeing how they can be reinterpreted and brought to life if a fresh way.
