John Bissell, Ugly Betty Music Supervisor:
In the middle of the season last year, Silvio Horta decided he wanted to give the music of Ugly Betty a more distinct identity, with a much stronger emphasis on dance and electronica genres and an increased use of Latin music, primarily salsa and reggaeton for the Suarez household. Bearing this in mind I started compiling all the electronica I could find to fit the various moods of the show and started making CDs of the material for the producers and editors.
Despite the musical focus, there is still a wide array of musical genres that fit within the three to seventeen songs that have been used in each episode, including classical, show tunes, alternative, hip-hop, opera and world music. I periodically make these compilations throughout the season of new music or music that might be specific to future episodes, and music that I know can be cleared and fit within the shows' budget.
On a day-to-day level, I read the various drafts of the script, notating possible song slots and clearing specific music that is mentioned in the script. If the music is to be performed on camera or sung as a visual vocal, I'll clear the song and make necessary arrangements for playback. I'm fairly hands on in my work with the editors and producers, and appreciate being part of the creative team, but ultimately Silvio makes the final decision as to what songs stay in the show.
Lenka:
I am a huge Ugly Betty fan. I started watching in Australia and i just think it's so funny and touching and awesome. I love the character and i feel really proud to have my song on her promo. I literally got goosebumps the first time i saw it.
